Random Rambling Tuesday

How did I get here?

I am asked at least once a day how I became a hair stylist. Most people ask if I have always known I wanted to be a hairstylist. I usually just give a quick, boring answer, just to get back on the topic of them. They really don’t want to know the truth. The truth would scare them right out of my chair. The truth is that in 7th grade, on a Wednesday night while skipping youth group, I cut my first head of human hair. It all took place in the girl’s bathroom of our church’s family life center. A girl visiting our church that night brought a pair of scissors in her backpack, because her parents wouldn’t let her cut her hair. There is no wonder why her parents wouldn’t let her cut it, she had the most beautiful spiral curls all the way down her back. As most girls do, we all went to the bathroom together, in a pack. When we got down there, we decided it was time for the haircut. With each cut, her hair became more and more uneven, therefore, we had to cut more. By the end, her beautiful spiral curls were up to her chin, and resembled a Christmas tree. There were many tears shed that day.

Now, fast forward 16 years (16 years, seriously?), I have moved to Greenville South Carolina, and am a hairstylist at Wisteria Salon and Spa. Through the front door of Wisteria, walks that same spiral haired girl from my past. We immediately reconnect, and ask each other what we are doing hundreds of miles away from Tifton. I tell her my story, and she tells me hers. Although I wasn’t assigned to cut her hair that day, I thought it would give her parents a good laugh to call them and tell them I was. Maybe, not! I guess that Wednesday night, 16 years ago, was the start of my career.

If you knew me during my college years, you probably just shook your head at the many times I changed my major. Let’s see: Special Education, Music, Pre-Dentistry, Pre-Counseling, Biology, and somehow I ended up with a degree in Mathematics. A mathematician doing hair! How DID I get here? I guess I always knew deep down that I wanted to be a hairstylist, but I just took several detours along the way. It was a long, hard road, but here I am!

Tell me your story! How did YOU get here?

Hey Delecta....I am wondering how well you like being a hair stylist??? I have been interested in Cosmetology for a LONG time now.....so I am thinking about going back to school in the next year or so (all depends on money and when is a good time for me to take the time to go). Anyways, just wanted to get some advice from someone who has been doing it and the pros and cons to it. Thanks! Jaci

Hey Delecta!..We must know some of the same people bc I stumbled upon your blog today! I love this post because I didn't detour in college, but have been ever since graduating and I'm still not sure what I REALLY want to do...I've narrowed it down, but that's about it...Hopefully God will reveal it soon and I'll be brave enough to go for it! Hope you're all doing well...Hopefully we'll all get together again soon! Take care.
